*meep meep* [vanishes into horizon]

I'm thinking of the original 1975 film, not the 2002 remake.

Plot: In a world where corporations have reduced people to docile sheep, one man dares to excel. This maverick attitude must be squelched, so the corporate bosses start playing hardball. Too late, they discover this iconic maverick knows just how to play that game.

Indeed it is MGM's Rollerball, starring James Caan as Jonathan E. Good memory, Latrans.

For what it's worth, some scenes in the film had to shot multiple times because the cast actually started enjoying the game and forgot to stick to the script. Surprised

This 2002 animated film chronicles the long distance relationship between a young girl drafted into the military and her boyfriend. Unable to respond to her messages, he can only wait longer and longer between message receipts as the distance between them grows.

Never actually saw this one, but I ran a Google search of animated films screened in 2002, and the most likely candidate is:
Escaflowne. How badly wrong am I? Embarassed

No, it's not Escaflowne. You're on the right track that it's a Japanese production though. Another hint then? The film is not feature length (only 25 minutes long).

I never would have gotten it if I hadn't seen it at the BYU-I classic movie night.
The movie's name is called "Undertow". It is a very good movie.

Cool. Let me go to a more recent Funny Animals feature.

The title character does his level best to defend the girl he loves from sinister forces. A peculiar accident separates the two, and our hero must make a long, difficult trek to reunite with the girl. This is not only a journey of distance, but also of discovery, as our hero learns that everything he believes in has been a lie, with much of the proof coming from one of his archenemy's minions.

Except for the 'girl he loves' bit, that could be The Fox and the Hound, with the hero being the Fox, the minion being the Hound and the archenemy being the Hunter. Of course that also kind of fails the 'recent' criteria as well.

Although The Fox And The Hound is not the animated feature I had in mind, Latrans, you may take some comfort from knowing that the correct feature was also produced by Walt Disney Pictures.
