Re: The Plate
Is Sarah afraid of breaking the plate? Or does the plate have a backstory? (The Porcelain Odyssey. The Misadventures of a Squirrel and a Piece of Dishware...)

Re: The Plate
I think it's the awkward implications that come with it. Do you return the plate? Is it part of a set they're using to pass out cookies and don't expect back? Do you return it right away and make it seem like the cookies were so bad you threw them out or the appearance of looking like you ate them too fast because you can't control yourself? Do you return it later and make it look like the cookies were so bad you couldn't be bothered to eat them or make it look like you forgot and can't be trusted with anything? What do you do with the plate!?
At least, that's my expectation.

Re: The Plate
Uh-oh. This is going to be a tough one! They've really put the pressure on you now, Sarah. You've got your work cut out for you. You must now:
1- NOT break the plate.
2- WASH the plate.
3- RETURN the plate.
4- RETURN the plate WITH something on it.
5- Return the plate with something on it that YOU made...from scratch.
6- Return the plate with something on it that you made from scratch and that is AT LEAST as good as what was on it when you received it!
"It followed me home, Mother. Can I eat it?" - Ririt :-)

Re: The Plate
And what gift from family is complete without a little competition, even the greater family that is the community? Kind of reminds me of some of the things I learned about the Basque people, especially the people from Seole, or Xiberoa in their tongue, especially the principles of the passing of the "holy bread" to one's closest neighbors, or 1st neighbors.
And Mr. Ed hit the nail on the head.

Re: The Plate
But wouldn't she be expected to give a thank you note and a gift in exchange even if it were a paper/plastic plate?

No, not expected, but very impressive if you still do.
Re: The Plate
Why, thank you, Renadt! Although that's one time out of... I forgot, but it's a lot! :-)Renadt wrote:...And Mr. Ed hit the nail on the head.
Amusingly, it took me a minute to realize you were talking about me. This is the only place (besides on my work shirts) that I use that name. And that's only because of a computer burp a few years ago. :-)

Because there's no judgement quite like churchgoing suburbanite judgement.

Odd, we never had that problem in OUR church, or in ANY other church I've been in.kendrakirai wrote:The J.A.M. wrote:And it would be a disaster because...?Ransom wrote:The J.A.M. wrote:Just buy some cookies, geez...

Then either your churches have better people, or they're better at hiding their judgement and gossip.
