A certain school in the news

Post  Ellen-Natalie on Thu Nov 20, 2014 2:25 pm

I try to avoid sharing soapbox/sticky politics stuff, but after the questions and feedback received concerning the "Honor Code" of Helen, Sarah and Mariah's school, I thought there might be some interest in some of the news stories I've been following concerning the changing the Honor Code of BYU (which is the inspiration for the girls' school).

Something I find interesting about the Honor Code is that it can be (and has been) revised and updated. Yet when people start campaigning to make changes to it, it's usually ignored or met with animosity. With the school being an hour away from where I grew up, I remember hearing and saying this a lot: "They agreed to this when they signed up. If they don't like it, they should just go somewhere else." I guess that's why these articles are so fascinating to me - people are actually talking about it instead of writing it off as 'it's their own fault.'

That being said, these articles aren't being posted to rustle jimmies or start flame wars - they're just being shared for those who may be interested. (Besides, y'all have been excellent in discussions of touchier subjects! <3 )

Here's some articles about male students pushing to be allowed to grow beards:

And an article talking about those arguing that Mormon students shouldn't be expelled if they change religions while attending school:

Following up on Honor Code debates, I've found what is probably the best website put together advocating for changing it:

http://www.freebyu.org/

It's a proposal from former or current BYU alumni who are trying to improve their school with these Honor Code changes, explaining how its' current set up hurts the goals that both the school and LDS church are trying to achieve.
