Your thoughts? Empty Your thoughts?

Post  blackgnosis Thu May 05, 2011 6:14 pm

"Well, yesterday's sermon was a big hit! We had a mass execution of 200 feeder fish that I pulled out of a fish tank and then threw all over the floor. The kids were in shock and then started to pic them up and put them back into the fish tank. Obviously, most of them died in the effort…the point however was made that they cared more about .15 cent feeder fish then they do about their friends dying w/o Christ." - Pastor Stephen Bishop

Nabbed from the pastors facebook page....

How does this make you guys feel?

Sounds like the pastor was counting on shock value to make his point stick. I don't believe it's the best method to really teach children sermons.

I'm curious if he tries this again with something higher up....

Would you condone his methods?

No, it's too extreme-nobody would be willing to listen. When my Mom was a little girl, the man giving their Sunday school lesson pulled out a gun and shot a block of wood in front of all the children. (Keep in mind, they're still inside the building!) His point being the block was the children, and the bullet was a sin committed. Then, he proceeded to dig the bullet out of the wooden block, and show the hole inside. You could dig the "sin" out through repentance, but the scars left by sinning in the first place are still there.

It was an interesting analogy, but nobody cared about the lesson-they were all upset at the man for pulling out a gun and shooting it in a church building in front of their children. I think parents would feel the same way if a well-intentioned man made their children watch a bunch of animals die (Yes, they're 15 cent fish, but how many of those kids had fish at home as pets?) and did nothing to help save them.

By the way, the gun thing didn't happen in Utah-my Mom grew up in the south.

This makes me feel... irate. In my opinion, animals' lives should not be sacrificed just to teach a lesson. It's too extreme, and not at all fair to the animals.

Especially if there was a previous lesson about how we're all God's creatures...

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. My internet's been rather flaky of late. I've got mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, yes, it's wonderful shock value and yes, it did shock me. Unfortunately I think the lesson derailed itself. There's a LOT more to 'saving your friends' than 'pick them off the floor and throw them back in the water'.

The problem I see this pastor running into is that he's going about teaching the lesson in the wrong way. People who are shamed, shocked, or otherwise cajoled into action will rarely, if ever, put honest effort into that action. Rather than trying to motivate his congregation in this way he should be seeking to make them want to save their friends.

Ultimately I'm left with neither shock, nor pitty. Just a vague sense of "Huh, there's another well intentioned person doing something stupid and pointless."

I don't condone this method now, and wouldn't change that were the lifeform in question to change. Feeder fish are sold for the purpose of meeting their end. Being eaten is natural for them. But nowhere in nature are they deliberately taken out just to be put to death dramatically. One more reason to keep my faith to myself, I suppose.

Its that level of hippocracy that other nihilists and atheist prey upon, I like giving benefit of the doubt and assuming not everyones going to be like these extremist types. I'll post more on this later.

Granted previous responses, I'd assume this to be a figure from the Mormon Religious hierarchy.

Thankies Ellen for that chart, I was curious to its hierarchy, and are glad its really simplified.

In all honesty I dun agree to the idea of religion as many people in the modern day setting follow, many people approach their beleifs as something purely modular as to them its "pick and choose" what to follow and to repent for "later". Hoowever I'm a total sucker for philosophy and stories, which is why I dont fully condemn the idea of religeon, However when I see events like what this paster performed I cant help but immediately want to make a blanket statement about it, but life and experience have teach me to STFU and pay attention to everything. What I feel distasteful in the act was that for one man to make what he felt was a point to prove, he needed to slain the lives of others. moreso to me it was a wasteful act. Zealots who think they have a point to prove to others that involves their religious beliefs often get others killed.

To me its inviting a serious escalation...If anything it invites a new ideal of Zealots. Allow me to walk through the twisted boundries of where this can go...

Why not bring one of their heathen friends in and cast some stones and pretend to be free of their perception of sin? Whats stopping him from moving onto something heir up then feeder fish... Why not chickens... After all those chickens would be slaughtered possibly...why not cut the heasds off 200 chickens? This person possibly asumes that only humans feel pain, so why not unwanted domestic animal such as stray dogs and cats...they'd die on the streets anyways, most of them wasted into existance, why not waste them out? Go get that 2 x4 and pulverize a unwanted dog....see kids? you're more concearned about the howls of this animals false pretenses of pain then you are about your friends finding GOD.

I feel I've overdone my angle... For the offense given from this I stop and apologize in recognition to this. But this "jesus camp" mentality is breeding the potential for monsters as I can see...or maybe just the one we address... I'm sure that wasting things is somewhere in any bible under the "Things we shouldnt do" area...

Should this be picketed? No. Should something be done? I'd like to think so, but really its up to the discretion of lawmakers and law abiders at this point... I'mma hush nao and listen to everyone.
