3D Animation Empty 3D Animation

So, I'm at BYU taking an Animation class. It's something that I've always been interested in since I was young and loved to draw. So far so good in the class, though.....this semester we're not doing any animating. We're only learning how to model right now. Our first model had to be of a lego figurine. It was to see how perceptive we are of things in the world. How accurately we can portray what we see.

The second project, which I'm currently working on, has to be an insect. This is to show how creative we are. How well we can make the program conform to us rather than being ruled by the program.

Here's my first model. I'll say that I'm really enjoying this class, but I'm always so far ahead in my mind rather than where I am on the program. It's hard organizing it all down.

Wow, that's really cool! And is that Slenderman I see in the background?

Not to bad, except where you have the hands joining into the arms looks partially square instead of completely round. Of course, they could've changed the design with how many years its been since I last did anything with lego guys.

They have. Our teacher specifically pointed out that the top of the "wrist" area was flat while the rest of it was round. I went with the design he showed us, however; he was pretty lenient depending on what we were using as a source material.

@Cutekitty
Ty, and yes. That is Slenderman in the background. Ha ha ha. >=3

The top of the wrist area is flat? Since when?? My four boys play with legos all the time, and I've never noticed that... hmmm maybe I should go look more closely.

Nice job on the modelling! Don't get frustrated that you're not animating yet--modelling, texturing, and rigging always come first. Smile

BYU has an AWESOME animation program! I interned back when they still had drawing tables, but I never got to see the CG side of it. I like the little gleam from the flashlight light~

Ty Teric. Yes, we're moving into the more complicated stuff now, with bump mapping, uv textures and all. I'm not sure how much I'm going to like unrolling all of my 3D objects into a 2D plane just to paint on them and wrap them back around. We'll see. I may end up loving it! It'll be fun to see what I can do.

I heard BYU had an excellent animation program, and my mom had found many articles online where Pixar had congratulated them on their program and religious studies. I've always loved Pixar.
And, our teacher told us that right now, with all 3D modeling and stuff, everyone has to create the model, unroll the textures to a flat, 2D plane, paint on said textures, and then apply it back to the objects, however; Disney thought this was too much hassle, and they've developed a way to paint 3D pixels and such, rather than painting a wallpaper over the object. The thing is, it's not to the point of being commercialized yet, but I thought that was really cool. Oh Disney, what will you come up with next?

Trevor--

I've always thought that it makes more sense to actually paint textures right onto the 3D model, but to be honest, the ability to do that is very expensive as far as computing power. The reason that, for years, 3D artists have been unwrapping to 2D to paint textures is because painting a flat texture is MUCH faster and less power-hungry for the computer to handle.

My recommendation would be to get used to it, because every professional 3D artist I've ever met knows how to do it. (As a professional game dev, I've met quite a few of them!)

*Nods* Which is pretty much what my teacher said as well. I just love the advance of technology. I might not understand all of it, but it's very appealing to me.

I'm looking forward to painting "wallpaper" for my models. I think it'll be fun! Thank goodness I have GIMP. =D
