Yes, but the heroine's usually wear some pretty heavy plot armor.

The MLP reference got an involuntary squeal the first time I saw this ^^;

A lot of people have claimed that they're not into MLP, but once they start watching it, they can't stop. Why is this?

That's exactly what happened to my husband. They way he described it, (I'm paraphrasing, it was way to long ago to remember his exact words): 'As I was watching, I thought it was an okay show. Then I realized this was specifically made for young children, and it suddenly became an awesome show!'

I've got a good friend who's an avid Brony and he's consistently disappointed that I'm not as enthralled with the show as he is. I agree that it's a good show and it's easy enough to watch. I just don't get into it that much.

Probably for the first bit, but not the second.

One of the strong points of the show is that each character is not just visually different, but also has strong and distinct personalities. With a minimum of exposure you'll already be able to pick out the different leads, and possibly many of the supporting cast as well. There's also the effect of pop cultural osmosis: when everyone else talks about something, you'll pick up on it even if you are never directly exposed to the original material. Case in point, I've never watched an episode with the Cutiemark Crusaders prominently featured but I know who they are.
